Backup (destination = Windows)

All JumpBox applications have the ability to do backups to an external file system. Backups can be run on demand or scheduled at various frequencies and will make a copy of all application data (including that which resides in both the database and the file system for the application). Backups require that you first register the JumpBox. The tutorial demostrates how you backup the data from a JumpBox to a PC running Windows XP Pro.
- First you need to create a user on the destination PC that will have access to the directory. Click the start menu > Administration > Computer Management.
- Select "Local Users and Groups > Users," right-click in the pane that displays the current users and choose "New User."
- Set the new username and password. Uncheck the "require new password next login" and check the "password never expires" and "user cannot change password" options. Click "Create."
- Now open your file explorer by right-clicking the start menu and choosing "Explore." This will bring up a directory tree. In the toolbar, choose "Tools > Folder Options."
- Click the "View" tab and scroll to the very bottom. Uncheck the option for "Use simple file sharing." Click "Apply."
- Now create a new folder somewhere on your file system and do right-click > Properties.
- Click the "Sharing" tab. Click the "Share this folder" radio button and give your share a name. Then click the "Permissions" button.
- Click the "Add" button.
- Enter the name of the backup user you just created and click "Ok."
- Remove any other users and give the backup user full control over this share.
- Lastly, we need to learn the IP address of this PC. Click "Start Menu > Run."
- In the dialogue box that appears, type "cmd."
- On the comman prompt, type "ipconfig" and note the IP address it tells you.
- Now close that window, open up a web browser and navigate to your JumpBox admin console. Choose the Samba option, specify the IP address of the destination PC you were just using, enter the user credentials and in the path field specify the share name (NOTE: you can only backup to the root of the share, the JumpBox can not currently back up to a subdirectory in this mode). Set the frequency of backups or use the "never" option if you just want to run backup on demand and specify how many versions you want it to keep. Click "Configure Backups" to commit these changes.
-
Provided that you entered everything correctly and your PC is accessible on the network, you should see a success message indicating that backups are now configured. If you wish to manually create a backup now, click the "Run Backup" button.
If you get an error message, can you ping the destination machine? Did you specify the share name in the path field correctly using forward slashes? Have you disabled the firewall on the PC to allow inbound connections?
-
You'll see a "Backup finished" message indicating that your data has been backed up successfully. Note that this is a backup of your application data only. Because a JumpBox is a true virtual appliance, in the event of a data loss, you can simply download a new JumpBox and restore using your last backup. You can see a list of all your existing backup files via the Restore link at the top of the page.

Backup error
I get this error on all attempts while trying to do a backupl:
"tar of /jumpbox/state.xml failed"
I have tried doing backups to a network shares as well as local machine running the VM.
In both cases the status is "Backups successfully configured."
