How do I turn on version control by default?

I am trying to make version control the default for documents in my repository but cannot figure out how to do it. Version control is one of the most important features of Alfresco so if it has to be a file-by-file process, that stinks. If there is a MySQL change I can make to have it happen, that is fine with me so long as I can figure out how to connect to MySQL.

Alfresco has good online documentation and forums on their site, so for Application specific questions like this, you are likely to find answers there.
