Antivirus and security within a JumpBox

I have been testing out various JumpBoxes on my own for a while now, and have recently proposed putting one into production at my workplace, but I've hit a small snag. Having little to no experience with JumpBox my system admins are reluctant to add the appliance to our environment. Their chief concerns are:

1. How do we add antivirus to the appliance? Our standard here at work is eTrust, but I believe that if I can show there is a reliable antivirus solution included in the appliance I could still move forward.

2. What form of backup solution is there for this JumpBox? Can we install backup software from Veritas on the appliance or are we only able to use the automated backup/export to network drive feature. This would still work for me, but it would be good to know if there are other options.

Antivirus and security within a JumpBox

Hello,
If you have a registration key for your JumpBox you have shell access to it and can do anything you want. That said, we can't always guarantee compatibility with third party software or plugins since we have no control over those. Nor can we provide support for third party software or plugins, though we do our best to provide the information you may need to integrate with a JumpBox.

The production JumpBoxes are based on Ubuntu Linux 6.06 LTS (the new betas are based on Ubuntu 8.04LTS) so you should check to see if those releases are compatible with the software you are considering using. Sadly, not many vendors provide support for Ubuntu at this point but that is slowly changing as it is becoming quite popular. It is my experience that even though a particular Linux distribution may not be officially supported by a vendor, the software in question can often be made to work. Though that may not be acceptable in some circumstances.

To try and specifically answer your question, if eTrust or Veritas will run on Ubuntu 6.06 and you have registered your JumpBox it is possible that you could continue to use that software.

Sorry to be so vague, but its hard to give concrete answers when dealing with third party software. I would love to hear of anyone who has success along these lines.
