I couldn't agree more, I don't know why we didn't think about it earlier, it would be a more simple form of VoIP phone and I know for a fact that many of us need that.
Asterisk 1.4 is an open-source PBX implemented 100% in software. It is quite the phone engine and is fully compatible with inter-operable standards like SIP, Jabber, and Jingle.
The AsteriskNow is a clean simple appliance built by Digium the sponsors of Asterisk. However, there is tremendous untapped potential for this technology, if mated to a good web programming language like PHP or Ruby.
Luckily, Asterisk is can be fully automated using the Asterisk Gateway Interface (AGI). Currently PHP-agi and RAGI (Ruby Asterisk Gateway Interface) are the most mature environments. Both are stable and feature rich and of course open-source.
Add in pre-configured instances of the other bits required to run a basic web application (Apache, mySQL, server-side interpreters) and you have one hell of a telephony development environment up and running in no time - thanks to Jumpbox.
Telephony (voice, SMS, IM) is hot and an appliance like this would enable developers to be up and running, producing innovative applications, in next to no time. I know my team could use this for our development, and I'm betting others could too.
TRY BPX
i need to trt BPX virual appliance.
Virtual PBX Appliance
I agree - I am using a Trixbox VM now - that is the way to go for the more complex Asterix environment (minus the Trixbox features).
Preconfigured for several VOIP providers (Viatalk, etc.) would make for a very slick product.

Virtual PBX Appliance
yes ... very good idea ... would be great to have.
Virtual PBX Appliance
Hi, I would like to suggest Jumpbox consider building an open-source telephone pbx appliance along the lines of this one built for VMware by rPath http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/804
