We have had problems with the joomla jumpbox instances crashing when mail is not configured. The errors are duplicated in multiple files. The following is a ls -l of the directory where I already deleted the backup files. Errors are being reported very quickly and this happens for joomla instances that are not public or active. I think it occurs when new users are being added to the joomla instance and it wants to send some sort of confirmation email. An option should exist to disable sending mail in the jumpbox admin interface.

Well, the emails are being generated by Joomla itself, the application does not appear to offer a way to completely stop email delivery. Thats what we truly need in this situation. There are a few threads in the Joomla 1.5 forums discussing this, notably:

But I don't like editing the code as a solution.
How many users do you have to create in order to cause this problem? Is it a large number?
I bet we can change the "sendmail path" under Global Settings -> Server -> Mail Settings to something like "/bin/true". If we have to trick an app, I much prefer we do it through configuration rather than patching it.

I have been setting the sendmail path to blank and that fixes the problem. It does require a reboot to stop the process that is trying to send the mail.

Alright, it looks like I have a reasonable in app (Joomla) solution to this. From within the Joomla Administration panel if you go to Global Settings -> Server -> Mail Settings you switch the Mailer to "Sendmail" and then change the Sendmail Path to /bin/true it won't send any mail even with the postfix server setup and running.

You can manually disable postfix (the mail server that is generating the logs) with the following command on the shell.
Though its possible that this would result in Joomla generating errors somewhere and filling your disk anyway. I don't see any evidence of that anywhere though.
I am definitely considering adding a way to disable postfix in the admin portal. But thats no guarantee that users won't have problems if an application insists on trying to deliver email and generates a mess in different ways. Also, depending on what exactly is being repeated over and over, there could be a postfix setting I could change, like, don't try delivering email for ever.
