Unable to access Hard Disk 1

I performed a reboot on my MySQLd jumpbox and now when I attempt to start it, I get the following error:

"Unable to access Hard Disk 1: An arror occurred when accessing the hard disk. Error ID: Undefined error: 0."
After awhile it will display the boot screen with this:
Splashy ERROR: Timeout (120 sec) occurred while waiting for a message on the Splashy socket.
A few errors are listed about Buffer errors on device sda
then it drops to a Busybox prompt.

The jumpbox is MySQLd-1.1.15.
I am using Parallels Desktop Build 5.0.9370 (Revision 589435; July 16, 2010).

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Any solution in sight?

I currently have the same problem and can not access my joomla web site due to this. Is there any way to at least make a backup of the data? or is there any solution to the problem!! I am desparate

Unable to access Hard Disk 1

Nick,
As I commented elsewhere in this post, this problem is typically an issue with Parallels (or other virtualization software) not being able to find the appropriate disk files. If this is a JumpBox that had previously been running correctly then either something external to the JumpBox has done something to remove a disk file or move the disk file. So the first step is to look at the JumpBox configuration, see what disks are configured (root and data in the case of Joomla15) and then make sure the files the config points at are actually present on the host. If they are not, then you have trouble.

If this is a JumpBox that you have just create with Parallels, make sure you have used the correct import feature:

http://wiki.jumpbox.com/doc/virtualization/parallels/desktop_5

Sometimes it turns out that something has happened on the JumpBox itself, but that typically doesn't happen unless the host suffers a power failure or something along those lines. In this case you just might need to manually repair the filesystem on whichever disk is broken. This would involve attaching a linux rescue CD of some type to the JumpBox and booting off that and manually repairing the disks.

re: Unable to access Hard Disk 1

I have experienced the same problem directly after updating Parallels Desktop 5 to build 9370.

I shut down the VM fully (MySQLd-1.1.15) and restarted after the update with the same error message.

I then downloaded a new copy of MySQLd-1.1.17. After PD5 converted the image I tried to start it with the same result.

I then tried a copy of the Ruby on Rails 1.1.7 with the same result.

My Ubuntu 10 and Windows 2003 server VM's both worked correctly, so it seems to be a problem with 8.04 LTS based images as far as I can tell.

Well this is good reporting,

Well this is good reporting, thanks, and it indicates a possible incompatibility with Parallels Desktop 5. We will move everything to lucid, for example the JumpBox for Joomla! 1.6 is on lucid but as a beta for right now while we see if there are any quirks. This is on my list of things to look into.

Can I get you any more info?

If there is anything else you need in the way of logs or configuration settings please just ask. I am keen to get this ironed out as I love running MySQLd as a JumpBox rather than on my local Mac.

I have opened a ticket with Parallels but so far the help they are offering relates to old KB articles http://kb.parallels.com/en/5734 that don't describe the error message I am seeing accurately.

Thanks

Dennis

Can I get you any more info?

The error makes it sound like it can't find the second hard disk. Look at the virtual machine configuration and see if, where, and how the disk in disks/data/ is attached to the VM.

It sounds like the VM conversion process is now losing the second (but not the first) disk for some reason.

I will see about upgrading my Parallels next week so I can see whats going on.

I'm not aware of any problems

I'm not aware of any problems with the JumpBox for MySQLd. If you try a different instance, does the problem still show?
